Redefining Strength through Yoga with Tejal Patel
Strength goes beyond the physical in yoga, encompassing mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. In this episode, Brea Johnson chats with Tejal Patel, a first-generation Indian American yoga teacher, writer, podcaster, and community organizer, about redefining strength through yoga. Tejal shares her insights on how yoga's deeper teachings can help us cultivate inner strength, resilience, and holistic well-being.
Tejal explains that true strength in yoga is not just about physical prowess but about handling life’s challenges with grace and compassion. They discuss the cultural influences on modern yoga practices in the West and the importance of reclaiming yoga's authentic roots. Tejal highlights the need for inclusivity and the value of trauma-informed and decolonized yoga practices.
The conversation is filled with powerful reflections on how to integrate yoga philosophy into daily life and the significance of inner experience over external appearance. Tejal offers practical tips for those looking to deepen their yoga practice, emphasizing the importance of restorative yoga and studying foundational texts like the Yoga Sutras.

Gentle Hip Shoulder Mobility Yoga Class
Very Interesting conversation, thanks! I am glad that you talk about it because I have the same issue on my right shoulder right now. I have been thinking about one of Coronas`s vaccinations effect. But it might be what you say, yes. In any case, yes, it is hard, because it hinders me on my practice in many levels. By the way, I recently discovered your channel, I am new teaching Yoga, even though I have been practicing Yoga since forever, but teaching is something different, and I am learning a lot from your experiences. So, please, keep it up!
the other disruption i am encountering is one student who keeps her phone on, answers it, puts the other person on speaker and starts talking during class. i think last time she has a 2 minute conversation. i have already addressed turning off phones in class with her and it continues to happen. last time her phone whent off and was quite far away from her because she moved spots half way through the class and i just turned it off when her ringer went off. but i feel like i shouldnt have to be doing that, nor do i want to be touching her phone. any advice?
Hi. I am usually very open, and let them move freely, as long as it is not dangerous and it does not disturb anyone. However, I strictly forbid having their phones and belongings on the mat. I actually ask them very politely to clear the space, and switch their phones off, or mute them before we start, in case that their phones ring in their bags and then we hear it from far away, to avoid interruptions and distractions. It works perfectly well. Then I ask again: "Have you all muted your phones, and cleared the space, so that all participants can have a mindful, quiet and effective practice?" I look at the eyes individually and check if they nod. Then proceed: "Great, thank you, and thank yourselves for making room and time for yourselves. Let´s start then. "
Oh wow, that's very disruptive! Not only answering the phone in class but also putting it on speaker, that's wild to me. That's disrespectful to both you and the whole class, I would talk to her kindly after class and say that we have a no-phone policy inside the yoga room. If you have to pick up the phone because it's an emergency or something, that's fine, but please leave the studio and go outside. And maybe before each class to reinforce the boundaries, I would kindly remind people of the "rules" of the class, saying something like- "Hi everyone, welcome to the class. This is a space of mindfulness and care for ourselves and each other, so a friendly reminder before we begin to please put your phones on quiet, arrive 5 minutes before class, grab whatever props you need, etc (whatever you want to say). Thank you for respecting our class guidelines, I appreciate it. Now let's get into a comfortable position and begin to breathe...." And you do this before each class so that it's reinforced and a general reminder for all. Hopefully that helps!
@@user-ub8dh4wp8c Thank you for sharing what you say, it's perfect! I just replied with something similar. It's helpful to make these expectations consistent and clear for everyone. Great response!

Thank you that feels helpful. Do you have thoughts please on doing cobra with severe back arthritis?
it Popped!! ❤
This works! I developed sudden jaw tightness out of nowhere a couple of weeks ago. This helped.
I'm a Yoga teacher and appreciate the imagery of pointing the tailbone towards the heels to anchor the pelvis. It's a small adjustment that makes a big difference. I'll be teaching future classes with this cue. I also love the cue of lengthening the spine, rather than bending it. Thanks for your insights!
Amazing!!! Thank you for sharing ❤
Your toes
Is it normal I feel it more in my back then on the chest?
What pants are these, they are very cute!
You have Gorgeous Soles! :) <3
Great stretches! Thank you soooo much! ❤
So Good. I have never seen this before. You Rock!
Doesn't do anything for me, even if I turn my forearms so much that the pinky finger side lifts off the ground. Where is this supposed to cause a stretching sensation?
This tends to happen for people who are more mobile. For you, try keeping the back of the hands, fingers, wrists rooted to the ground and slowly move your torso back towards your heels. There will be a point where you can't quite go further back without lifting a part of the hands and fingers off the ground. That's the spot where you'll usually start to feel the stretch! If not, keep doing everything as described above but add in some external rotation of the upper arms. Feel like you're rotating your biceps away from each other while keeping the hands, fingers, etc down and moving back. Hopefully that all makes sense and gives you more of an active stretch sensation!
@@HeartBonesYogaAnatomyMobility Great, yes, I could feel something now, mainly in the forearms, a little bit in the upper arm (that's where I felt a limitation at some point, not being able to shift further backwards). Will explore this more to see if I can find the stretch into the shoulders and neck also. Thanks!
😘😘
First time I see the knee extended to far over the ankle. Thanks
